Our History

In 1833, Chemung Canal Trust Company first opened its doors to serve the people of Elmira, New York. Our mission was to become a strong and independent financial services organization that created value for our customers, employees, and the communities where we do business, while maintaining the highest standards of business ethics. We understood the importance of cultivating meaningful connections; upholding our reputation for honesty and integrity — we still do.

Over the years, we recognized the need to grow and expand our reach to meet the needs of the hardworking people of the greater Buffalo area and beyond. In 2011, we acquired Capital Bank to serve the people of the greater Albany area. In 2024, we launched the Canal Bank brand, bringing our longstanding legacy of hard work and dedication to the people and communities of Buffalo.

Today, we continue to offer a highly responsive, supportive, and client-driven environment that ensures we prioritize customer well-being above all else.
